my-healthconnect was recently in Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland, in the Horn of Africa.  One has probably not heard much about this city and yet its citizens can be found all over the world – in the Americas, in Europe and even in Asia. my-healthconnect, in its mission to take healthcare to remote areas, went to Hargeisa to explore possibilities of a long term association with the medical teams there. In doing so, we could help the patients in Hargeisa connect with the right surgeons/specialists in India for a quality medical opinion and appropriate treatment for their health needs.

Our mission was to ensure patients in Hargeisa get connected with the right surgeons in India.

On landing in Hargeisa, one can see that the city is developing well in terms of its infrastructure as it is, but healthcare, on the other hand, is still at a very nascent stage. While there are many General Physicians, medical specialists are hard to find.  People, who are diagnosed with any complex health ailment, must travel out of the country for treatment/surgery.

We met a 11-year-old who had been diagnosed with blood cancer (leukemia).  The child’s parent connected with us and shared his latest reports. While a conclusive treatment plan was not possible with the basic reports that were available, two prominent oncologists in India were able to suggest provisional treatment plans.

The patient, working through my-healthconnect, is more positive about the treatment and schedule of the visit to India as two important items are taken care of:

– The treatment is planned during a period that accommodates the annual school schedule.

– There is an estimate of the total costs involved for the stay in India as, being a minor, one of the parents would accompany the child through the entire travel and treatment period and the plan would need to include this additional expense.

While on location, there was an opportunity to facilitate a medical opinion for an elderly patient diagnosed with a cyst in the brain. Though the patient was ready to travel to India for treatment, keeping his advanced age in mind, we recommended getting a second opinion on the patient’s current treatment plan from one of our specialists. Analyzing his reports over our platform, a specialist in India assured him that the current treatment was in the right direction and that travel was not really required given his medical condition.

Analyzing his reports over our platform, a specialist in India assured him that the current treatment was in the right direction and that travel was not really required given his medical condition.

The quick second opinion from a specialist gave the patient:

– An assurance that he was receiving the correct medical treatment for his condition

– The comfort of a diagnosis without the hassle of travel to another country

As part of our initiatives, my-healthconnect facilitates surgeries for patients who require one, and we also assist patients who could benefit by a second opinion.

We brought hope and confidence to a 11-year-old and an elder in a remote location.

Imagine what we could do for you!
