my-healthconnect has been connecting patients and doctors for over two years now.  In our mission to make these connections and bring better healthcare to those who seek it, we have often reiterated the need to get a quality second opinion and have seen, as in the case outlined below, that two heads are, in fact, better than one.

We have often reiterated the need to get a quality second opinion and have seen, as in the case outlined below, that two heads are, in fact, better than one.

Recently, we were approached by a patient from Kolkata – a 65-year-old gentleman, who had been suffering for more than a year with painful swelling in both legs, even experiencing bleeding in the right leg. The initial diagnosis by his general physician was varicose veins and the patient was advised to wear compression stockings/dressings, which is the conservative and first line of treatment to manage varicose veins.

Unfortunately, the treatment did not work and the swelling persisted.  He was then advised laser surgery on his legs to fix the problem on an urgent basis.  With only a week to decide, the gentleman was unsure about the diagnosis and tried to seek a second opinion. Luckily for him, he heard of my-healthconnect through one of our previous patients. Impressed by the speed at which he could get his query answered, he connected with us on the platform and shared all his reports.

A specialist vascular surgeon performed a preliminary analysis of the reports and acknowledged that the condition looked like varicose veins, but in his opinion, the case merited further investigation. The patient travelled from Kolkata to Hyderabad planning for a 5-6 day trip assuming that he would need to undergo surgery.

Normal Veins versus Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are dilated, elongated veins that are visible to the naked eye and typically occur on the legs and the thighs. However the underlying problem needs to be confirmed by a color doppler test, which helps the vascular surgeon study the disturbed morphology better.  In this case, our patient’s test results helped the vascular surgeon identify that the swelling in the patient’s leg was just a cosmetic issue, and the veins/valves in the blood vessels were fine.

The patient was extremely relieved that surgery could be avoided and is now on the right treatment for his condition
